Kaupapa Maori Health Care Services

in the Western Bay of Plenty, New Zealand

Te Manu Toroa (the albatross that glides the ocean) originally known as Western Iwi Health, was established in 1997 to provide a kaupapa Māori model of Health Care that linked and integrated services to Māori in the Western Bay of Plenty region.

Te Manu Toroa started with a small GP Clinic based in central Tauranga. Since then, we have grown and expanded to include 3 GP services (Tauranga Moana City, Waitaha & Te Akau Clinics) Tamariki Ora, Kaupapa Māori Advanced Nurses Services, Specialist Nurses Service, Oral Health Programmes, Mental Health & Whānau Centred Services.

At a sector level Te Manu Toroa is affliated to Ngā Mataapuna Oranga - a Māori Primary Health Organisation located in Tauranga. Our association with Ngā Mataapuna Oranga provides us with the vehicle to ensure our focus on the delivery of kaupapa Māori services are supported at a Provider level.

In total there are 7 providers who are part of the Ngā Mataapuna Oranga network, all whom work collaboratively to provide services to our community.
