Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (mHBOT), is a specialised therapy that creates an increase in atmospheric pressure combined with an increase in oxygen concentration using a Hyperbaric Chamber.

Your body’s natural healing cannot take place without adequate oxygen levels in the body’s tissues. Cells and tissues without oxygen die, or become hypoxic. Hypoxia is a condition in which the body or region of the body is deprived of oxygen. Hypoxia is a major factor in the development of stroke, heart attack, Alzheimers, dementia and cancer.
Increasing the amount of oxygen circulating throughout your body promotes faster and more effective healing for a wide variety of diseases and illnesses. It can also provide numerous preventative health benefits.
Increasing oxygen allows the body to incorporate more oxygen into the blood cells, blood plasma, central nervous system fluid, joint fluids and through all the tissue of the body including discs and bones.
Hyperbaric Oxygen is not a temporary fix. It is a non-invasive, safe treatment and has a growing body of documented studies that substantiate its ability to help people live longer, more comfortable and productive lives.
The treatment process
Contact us to book an initial 30 minute consultation session to discuss your individual requirements. You can usually get started shortly after your consultation, as booking times allow.
Please allow two hours for each session. All mHBOT treatments are 90 minutes with a complimentary 16 minute PEMFt session included.
Response times to treatments are unique to each individual, however case studies show that with continued use the therapy produces progressively dramatic results.
In the chamber you will feel a change in ear pressure (similar to the feeling when ascending or descending in an aeroplane). The remainder of the treatment will be peaceful and tranquil. You can read a book, listen to a podcast or audio book, watch a movie or simply sleep.
After effects reported are a slight pressure in the ear for a short while, a pleasant feeling of euphoria. Some clients have reported having the best night’s sleep after a session, others say it’s like having the “cobwebs” removed from their brains!

Common Questions
How does it work?
In the Hyperbaric Chamber, as air pressure increases, more oxygen is “pushed” into the body’s fluids to boost oxygen levels. Supplementary oxygen can be added to the chamber via the use of an oxygen concentrator.
This oxygen becomes infused into the body’s blood, plasma and cerebral fluids. Red blood cells become saturated with oxygen and all remaining oxygen dissolves directly into other body fluids and tissues.
How will I feel during mHBOT?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is generally painless and without any discomfort. In fact, it is enjoyable and relaxing to the point where we might even have to wake you up at the end of a session.
At the beginning of the treatment, when the pressure is increased, as well as at the end when the pressure is decreased and brought to normal, you will feel a pressure change in your ears similar to that which you experience in an aircraft.
Prior to treatments we will teach you how
to equalise the pressure changes in your ears. Fullness and popping in your ears upon change in pressure will probably feel similar to that experienced when flying or going over a mountain range.
During treatment you may feel slightly warm whilst the chamber is pressuring, comfortable when the chamber is at pressure and slightly cool as it depressurises. A blanket will be offered to you to make you more comfortable.
How will I feel after the session?
Your body will be detoxing and this is normal. However, some people may experience minor symptoms associated with detoxing after the treatment.
Following your first few sessions, you may experience fatigue as the body sweeps itself clear of toxic debris that have built up in the body.
This is safe and normal during the healing process. Alternatively, you
may feel more alert, awake and energised with no detox symptoms – it will depend on your own body.
What should I wear?
You can wear any clothing which is loose fitting and comfortable to lie down in. Aftershave and other perfumes should not be worn.
What can I do in the chamber?
Whilst in the chamber, you can read a book, watch a movie on your electronic device in flight mode, meditate or simply relax…and breathe in the benefits.
Can I communicate when in the chamber?
Yes, you will be able to talk with your technician at any time via the built-in intercom or a walkie talkie.
Is this therapy safe?
Generally, mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy is very safe and can be combined with most other therapies without the side effects associated with some treatments. mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has many healing and therapeutic benefits and is a drug-free therapy. The chamber can be utilised without the danger of oxygen toxicity.
When should mHBOT be avoided?
If you are currently taking any of the following medications, then hyperbaric oxygen therapy should be avoided:
- Cisplatin—a chemotherapy agent
- Disulfiram (Antabuse®)—an oral tablet used to treat chronic alcoholism
- Doxorubicin (Adriamycin®)—a chemotherapy agent
- Mafenide Acetate (Sulfamylon®)—a topical cream used to prevent and treat bacterial or fungal infections
Please also note the following contraindications to mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy:
- Congenital Spherocytosis
- COPD/Emphysema with air trapping
- Untreated Pneumothorax
- Upper
Respiratory Infections—URIs can make it difficult for the patient to clear his/her ears, which can result in inflammation of sinuses, or sinus squeeze. - Acute asthma attack
- Cardiac disease: patients with an ejection fraction less than 35%
- High Fever
- Seizures
- Pregnancy
- Immunosuppressants
Is mHBOT good for children?
Yes, mHBOT yields wonderful results with children. In fact, research with children suffering from brain injuries and genetic disorders shows positive results and great promise. We have a two-person chamber which is spacious enough to take a child and their parent or carer.
How long is a treatment session?
Sessions usually last between 60 and 90 minutes however you can use the chamber for much longer without any adverse effects. After each session you can carry on with your day as normal – there are no restrictions.
Are the results permanent?
Hyperbaric therapy serves by supporting the body’s own innate healing system by providing it with the effect of extra oxygen to produce extra energy for organic regeneration of cells.
Results occurring within the hyperbaric chamber are capable of being maintained after the completion of the treatment due to the body’s ability to sustain function, repair and regeneration, although one session is typically not enough to create lasting change.
How many treatments will I need?
Treatments will vary according to the type of health issue you are managing. Studies show that frequency of treatment is important in achieving optimal outcomes. We are all unique individuals and our response time to any treatment is equally unique.
A health issue that has only recently started or an acute injury such as a very recent concussion are likely to respond quickly. This is because long-term tissue and cellular changes have not taken place. Preparing for surgery usually requires only a couple of sessions and then follow-up as soon as possible after surgery to reduce infection rates and speed recovery. Sports people find that a session after hard training enables them to recover quickly and train harder.
For very long standing/chronic health conditions our practitioners are likely to recommend an initial group of 20 sessions, 60-90 minutes in duration, 4 days per week. After an initial consultation, the mHBOT technician will come up with a treatment protocol catered to your personal needs.
